Research paper tutorial with Janet

Things discussed:

• A very positive and helpful conversation. Janet said that the paper reads nicely and is well constructed which is good to hear.
• We talked about some of the issues around AI discourse. I am keen that this paper is about something more than just AI. I also want to be fair: this can’t be a hitjob on Anadol or I will undermine my own argument. The paper is necessarily cautious about extrapolating too much from one example.
• Janet was happy with the theorisation which was a bit of a relief. I have been a little worried that I have shoehorned in too many of my own hobbyhorses in by using Derrida, Steyerl, and Debord. I think that they all add value, but I was concerned that it was a bit much for such a short piece of writing. This is the area where I think that there is still some reading to do.
• The Kleon quote is inappropriate for an academic paper. This is fair enough. I just liked the idea of him and Derrida effectively making the same point.
• We discussed various points concerning formatting, structure, and style. All of these result in some actions that I will detail in the next section.
• Janet wondered if there might be a way of combining the case-study/ theory sections. I am not sure about this. I have aimed for clarity, and I would be concerned that this might lead to some repetition. We also talked about smoothing some of the transitions and I think that this might be where I will go.

Next steps:

• Correct date on Norman citation in text.
• Check on correct format for paper: is it ‘bibliography’ or ‘references?’
• Change Derrida citation in bibliography to earlier date.
• Check whether same for Debord.
• Replace Kleon quote.
• There are too many uses of ‘this paper’. Find some synonyms/ different constructions.
• The presentation of figures/images in the text needs to be better.
• List of figures required.
• Final submission needs to be double-spaced in point 12 text. Check on permitted fonts.
• Look at formatting of headings.
• Check for American English.
• Check formatting of bibliography. Zotero is a bit flaky, which I guess is a meta-data thing.
