Tutorial #3

Tutorial with Betty

Things discussed:

  • Betty started with some really helpful suggestions for further reading. We discussed the fact that I am keen to make this work from the position of being sufficiently informed on the topics that I am considering without getting bogged down in technical detail which is probably beyond my capacity to understand.
  • We discussed the importance of critically engaging with my own digital entanglement and Betty was refreshingly optimistic about the ways that some people are finding to control the amount of big-tech in their lives. Interestingly, the next day The Guardian published this piece; https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/feb/26/how-to-replace-amazon-google-x-meta-apple-alternatives and I intend to work through some of these options over the next months.
  • We talked about the origins of my project and some of the experiments that I have been doing with collage and AI. Betty pointed out that these are not on my blog and that there is little evidence of work-making on the journal. This is something that I know that I have got wrong in the first part of the course and comes from me misunderstanding the point of the reflective journal.
  • I explained what I was planning to do for the Interim Show and I talked about my desire to make my practice more cohesive. Betty said that I shouldn’t worry about that too much at this point.
  • Betty asked how the different activities (painting/ printmaking/ collage) come together. This is something that I am still thinking about and whilst I committed in my Study Statement to making work in the context of painting, I do not want to pre-judge where I will end up.
  • We talked about the ‘overwhelm’ that I sometimes experience when using AI. Might there be a way of bringing that tension into the project? This is a good idea and something to consider in the iterative experiments that I am going to do.
  • Betty suggested that I look at Avery Singer which has been very useful. Justin Mortimer was also mentioned. I do know his work but should have another look.

Next steps:

  • Both this tutorial and preparing the Unit 1 Assessment have been super useful in calibrating where I am at the moment with the course. ‘Must try harder’ is the short answer!
  • I have already done a workplanning exercise and committed to ensuring that studio activity is documented at least once a week.
  • Prepare for the interim show.
  • Continue to work up the framework that will guide the studio experiments that start after the Low Residency.
